The event GE-GWD maize was developed by editing a glucan water dikinase (gwd) gene using a meganuclease delivered through Agrobacterium-mediated transformation.
The intended phenotype of GE-GWD maize is an increased starch content in leaf and stalk tissue. Higher starch content in plant biomass can increase the energy content for animal feed or improve glucose extraction from biomass for biofuel production.
The developer Agrivida requested confirmation with USDA-APHIS that a maize event with increased starch content is not a regulated article subject to APHIS oversight under 7. C.F.R. part 340. Due to confidential business information in the inquiry letter, it is unclear whether this event resembles one of the maize lines as described by the same developer in a patent document (US2017/0137836 A1).
PCR and Southern blot analyses confirmed that the introduced meganuclease has been segregated away resulting in a null-segregant line homozygous for the mutant allele.
